Central School Resource Program

Helping All Students Succeed

by Cheryl Seachord

I am the Resource teacher for Kindergarten through 2nd Grade at Central School. The Resource program provides services to students who have been identified as having special needs according to state guidelines in Rule 51. Students receive instruction individually or in small groups in areas such as reading, language arts, spelling, and math.

Students that are having difficulty in the regular classroom may be referred to the Student Assistance Team (SAT) by their classroom teacher or a parent. The SAT will make recommendations of instructional strategies to the classroom teacher. If the accommodations do not help the student be successful in the regular classroom, the student will be referred for evaluations. A Multidisciplinary Team, consisting of school staff and the parents, will meet to determine if the student meets the criteria for a special needs verification.

Then a team of school staff and parents develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP) listing specific objectives the student will work on. IEPs are updated annually. Students receive instruction at their own instructional level and work towards meeting objectives on their IEPs. Parents are kept informed of their children's progress through quarterly progress reports.
