What is the Accelerated Reader Program?  The Accelerated Reader Program is a computerized reading management program that motivates students to read while increasing student reading ability.  It has grown to become the most widely used reading management software in schools today.  Millions of children use the program and can prove significant gains in reading ability because of their increase reading practice.  How Does It Work?  It's as easy as 1-2-3!

How does it work?  It’s as easy as 1-2-3!

1.  Select a Book.  Students make their own choice from the outstanding titles on the either the Jefferson or the CentralSchool’s Accelerated Book List.  The book range in reading level from Pre-Primer through Grade 12.  These books can be found in either of the elementary school’s library, at the public library, or may be from a personal home collection.

 2.       Read the Book.  Students then read their books at their own pace.  Accelerated Reader books become an important element of the student’s independent study time as well as a part of several scheduled AR reading times scheduled throughout the school day.   Many students get so excited about the program, they read every chance they get, and eagerly discuss books and recommend them to their friends.

 3.       Take the Test.  Students take a computerized test, featuring 5,10, or 20 multiple-choice comprehension questions.  The program tells the student how many questions he or she answered correctly.  It shows the answers for the questions missed, and awards reading points.  The program awards points based on the length and difficulty of the book.   Teachers may or may not use these points as incentives for the students.  If the student passes the test, the teacher can rest assured that the student really has read and understood the book.
