Mark Twain
Tom Sawyer
by Karen Horky
The 7th grade English classes will be reading Mark Twain's classic novel The Adventure of Tom Sawyer. Set in Missouri during the 1800's we will follow the antics of Tom, Huck, Aunt Polly and Injun Joe. We will also discuss and compare the social issues and discrimination of pre Civil War times. Written in the dialogue of the South when slavery was legal and Native Americans did not hold a respectable place in society we will talk about "why" this book has been censored or banned in some places and times.
The students will need to answer questions on each chapter and also complete a diorama on their favorite scene from the book. Other assignments maybe assigned throughout the reading of the book.
I encourage you to read or reread this classic book with your child. I also have the CD's to read along with the book.
