Ground Breaking for Athletic Complex

Work Begins on Project

by Fred Helmink

On Monday, October 17, over two hundred people gathered south of the Fairbury Jr/Sr High School to witness and participate in the ground breaking ceremonies for the future athletic complex. This kicks off Phase II of the development as Phase I was the completion of the eight-lane all weather track east of Jefferson.

Many community members and students attend the ceremonies

Class of 2014 takes part in the groundbreaking

The ceremonies got under way as Superintendent Fred Helmink spoke about the history behind Quinn Field and how it has been used since the early 1920s. He also told of the many times this type of project had been talked about and planned for, but never got started due to lack of funds. He then thanked the citizens group who had initially met in 2002 to discuss the future of athletics and facililties in Fairbury. This group spearheaded the efforts to raises funds for this project and are still currently in the process of soliciting donations and pledges to complete the project. Co-chairs for this committee are Chuck and Sharon Moore. Anyone desiring to contribute to the athletic complex should contact them or send their donation to the address listed below. Approximately 1/3 of the needed funds have been collected as of this writing.

Although completion date of this project is not yet know, many hope that the younger athletes of the Fairbury elementary and junior high will someday be able to utilize this facility. A big thank you goes to those who have already contributed and also to those who made the ground breaking ceremonies a huge success.
