CELEBRATE 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL
Students and staff celebrated their 100th Day of School on Monday, January 29th. Students participated in a variety of theme-related lessons and activities, some of which included cookie baking/decorating, coin toss probability, as well as counting, reading and writing 100’s many, many times over. It is truly amazing to think of all that has been accomplished in these first 100 days of school. What’s even more shocking is to realize that over one-half of the school year is behind us and yet we have so much more we want to do!
NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK – FEB. 5-9, 2007
Students today face many challenges, and the importance of caring, dedicated, and qualified counselors in our nation's schools cannot be overlooked. School counselors not only serve students in helping them to achieve their full potential, they also work closely with parents and teachers as we strive to work together to help students succeed. Parents, as well as their children, often feel helpless when faced with the complex challenges associated with childhood and parenting. A school counselor can help both parents and students find positive ways to deal with these tough issues.
The American School Counselor Association has designated the first full week in February as National School Counseling Week. This is a time for school counselors to celebrate and share their contributions to education, as well as look toward the future for continued success. It is important for students to know that they have a place to turn when they are in need. A school counselor can provide the support and guidance which the student is seeking. As facilitators in guiding our students toward healthy and happy futures, school counselors are recognized and appreciated during National School Counseling Week!
At Central Elementary School, our students and faculty are quite fortunate to have the caring and professional school counseling support of Mr. Myron Parsley. Mr. Parsley is now in his 9th year of providing counseling services for our school community’s youngest children. Traveling to Fairbury twice each week from his home in Lincoln, Mr. Parsley supports children through individual sessions that incorporate developmentally-appropriate and motivating activities designed to assist students as they identify and work to achieve individualized goals. This year we’ve also been fortunate to offer our children additional opportunities and support with two counseling interns – Mrs. Brooke McDowell and Mrs. Cathy Simmerman – during each semester. Participating children at Central Elementary School are initially identified for counseling support either through teacher or parent referral. For more information about our school’s counseling program, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or the school principal.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART
Jump Rope for Heart envelopes, as well as a letter explaining the activities were sent home with students last week. Students are to ask friends, relatives, and neighbors for donations and return them on or before Feb. 7th, 2007. All checks need to be made to the American Heart Association. We will “Jump Rope for Heart” at school on Feb. 12th during our regular P.E. classes. Please note the permission form attached to the envelope, it needs to be signed and returned as soon as possible. Thanks in advance for your help with this very worthwhile project. If you have any questions or concerns please contact Mrs. Hinman, Elementary P.E. teacher at 729-2418.
VALENTINE PARTY REMINDER
Central Elementary students will have an opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 14th. PTA Room Parents have begun planning and will be contacting parent volunteers for donations and/or assistance. Each classroom will have a brief party (times vary according to daily schedules) where students will enjoy treats and distribute individual Valentine wishes.
Students are not required to bring Valentines to school to share with classmates; however, if students do bring Valentines we ask that parents ensure that he/she brings one for every child in the classroom. Thank you!
LUNCH BUNCH
Starting February 6th, each student (K-2) at Central Elementary will have the opportunity to attend a “Lunch Bunch” at one point throughout this semester. Lunch Bunch is an activity where five students each week in each grade-level will have the opportunity to eat lunch with Mrs. Simmerman, our counseling intern. The small group will reinforce basic manners and will discuss various topics such as: Character Counts, bullying, friendship and building self-confidence. The students and Mrs. Simmerman will bring their meals (either lunch from home or the cafeteria) and will eat together for about 20-25 minutes. Students will then be able to join their peers for recess time. Kindergarten students will have “Lunch Bunch” on Tuesdays, First grade students on Wednesdays, and Second grade students will be Thursdays. We hope this will be a fun and positive experience for everyone!
SunnyD BOOK SPREE
Did you know that teachers spend, on average, $550* of their own money on classroom materials every year? SunnyD and Scholastic have teamed up to create an exciting book and cash giveaway to help teachers obtain much-needed supplies for their classrooms and we need your help! The SunnyD Book Spree invites teachers to collect UPC labels from SunnyD products to earn Scholastic books that kids love. You can contribute by saving SunnyD UPCs at home and sending them to your child’s teacher.
Visit www.scholastic.com/sunnyd to find out more details on how to participate. We’ve also included free materials for you to download that will help get the whole family Moving, Laughing, and Thinking every day. Thanks for doing your part to help SunnyD and Scholastic help teachers. From your friends at SunnyD.
