While I walked in the classroom I noticed there was something
different, but I couldn’t think of it. Finally it popped in my head
like a giant and really loud fire cracker. There was a guest
teacher today. She told us her name, Mrs. Welsch, as we emptied out
our backpacks.
After we got done signing the lunch count, Mrs. Welsch told us it
was time to sign the pledge. She stood back and watched in
amazement. It was difficult because it was our first time without
Mrs. Dux there to guide us.
Upon the ringing of the bell, we headed off to science. Above the
noise, Mrs. Hudson told us to get out our paper from yesterday as
we walked in the class room. We went over that worksheet together.
Inside my tummy butterflies developed as I got ready to start the
first chapter test. Mrs. Hudson announced that we could use any of
the papers handed back to us and our book which seemed to relieve
about a pound off my shoulders.
As the rest of the class came in from the other classrooms, Mrs.
Hudson handed out a worksheet with a maze on it. When the rest of
the class was quiet, she told us we needed to save the turtle from
the rest of the obstacles. She then said we had to do page 31. We
went over that in class. The room seemed to get louder as we all
partnered up for practicing fluency when we read.
Due to the strong smell of the food, I got even hungrier as we
walked in the cafeteria. We were first today, so we had plenty of
time to eat our yummy Sloppy Joes, fruit, grapes, beans, and milk.
Everyone engulfed their food so they could go out and have our
first and last recess. Mostly everyone played football and dodge
ball.
In front of the marker board stood Mrs. McAllister ready to teach
math. She told us to get out some colors to fill out some graphs
that were on our assignment yesterday. She said we where going to
do the graphs today in class. When we got done, Mrs. McAllister had
us check our paper from yesterday. For the first time I felt a
chill of sadness as she handed out our first assignment, which
didn’t seem right because it was a beautiful day outside.
In P.E. we ran 5 laps around the gym for warm up. Then we went over
the basic rules of volleyball and how to play. Miss. Seibolt had us
work on our serving.
After P.E. we were off for the movie theaters. In social studies we
where going to watch 4 videos about Mesopotamia (which means land
between rivers) and Sumar. We also learned about their trading
system, their writing system, and some of the stories they
told.
Before the movie was even over, Mrs. Welsch told us we had to write
10 sentences using prepositions. For instance, “Without my
computer, my life would be a disaster.” Without is the preposition
in that sentence.
Writing went right into study hall. Since there were only
assignments in math and writing, almost everyone was done with
their homework pretty quick. Mostly everyone ended up with a book
in their hands rather than homework, and everyone looked happy
about that.
What was so different about today, I can’t figure it out. Finally
it popped in my head like a giant and loud fire cracker. Nothing
was different about today. It was just another great day in room
226 at Jefferson Elementary School.
