Spring Sign Language Classes
by Jennifer Owen
Fairbury Public Schools recently offered a sign language course for staff and community members. Approximately 50 people participated in the classes, which met once a week for five weeks. Three classes were offered: a beginning sign class taught by Sheri Cooney, a beginning sign class taught by Rosie Hill, and an intermediate sign class taught by Jenny Owen. Participants in the class learned new sign language vocabulary and practiced their skills through a variety of activities.
Members of the beginning sign classes were also given a chance to meet and watch the signing of some members of Nebraska's Deaf community. The classes provided a fun and challenging opportunity for people in the community to learn a different language.
