Build a Computer Workshop

by Tammi Mans

Three FHS students attended the Build a Computer Workshop (BAC) on Friday, January 29th at ESU 6 in Milford.   Michael Bohlmeyer, Craig Maschmann, and Justin Howard built two computers that are functional on a closed network. During the morning session, students were shown safe practices in dealing with computer components and were given the specific directions for building an operational computer.   Once the computers were assembled and working properly; software installation, computer use, and exploration of the LINUX operating system began.  As the morning came to a close students were exposed to Ubuntu, an open source (free) LINUX based operating system and gained a better understanding of the operating system.

The afternoon session consisted of students gaining greater insight of open source applications and downloading applications to their computer.   Finally, students were introduced to video capture programs, green screening, and other procedures needed to create digital "help" videos.

Anyone interested in seeing the one of the computers built is welcome to stop by the media center at the high school.
