Fog? Again? It’s been so foggy for the past 2 weeks but it’s letting up. We can actually see each other unlike some of the other days. The white fluttery snow is melting and the temperatures are rising! Wahoo! I’m tired of all the snow just like everybody else!
When I got inside I had plenty of time before reading class, so I read part of my book “The River” by Gary Paulsen. It’s the sequel to “Hatchet.” In this book Brian is asked to go back to the wilderness and teach how to survive out there. He said it was just luck that he lived through his first adventure. When he goes back into the wilderness, he thought it was too easy, but then something goes wrong and Brian has another wild adventure. I read a chapter before the bell rang and I went to reading class.
Everybody got discombobulated when they came into reading because all of the desks were changed around. After awhile Mrs. Dux told us to come to the front so she can place us where she wants us. Most of us got to choose, though. After we got settled into our new places we graded our “Anne Frank” vocabulary worksheet. It was one of those “free” one hundred papers, but only if you actually looked up the word. Then we read out of our book “Anne Frank: A Diary of a Young Girl.” That book is about a girl who hides in a “Secret Annex” from the Nazis. We were assigned to read entry’s from February through March. It seems like a lot, but Mrs. Dux informed us that tomorrow we have over an hour to read or work in reading class. There are two other assignments for reading. We have to finish our Martin Luther King Jr. booklet and edit another person’s story about where we like to go to be alone. Now if you don’t think that isn’t a lot of assignments, wait till language arts.
When language arts came around, we quickly went into our spelling books. We were assigned to finish lesson 24. There are lots of ways in our books to help us with are spelling. An example is morphographs. It is also known as word parts. We also did Reasoning and Writing. Part B was assigned to be finished by Monday. In part B, we had to write three rules about some strange looking figures in our book. An example would be: all pets with a collar have an eye. Let’s just say that Reasoning and Writing isn’t that fun but it does help and we do learn a lot.
Right when we were going to start social studies, I had to go to an orthodontics appointment. I missed science and math, too. I still got the assignments. For math we had to do problems 22-32 even. Nothing for science! Social studies was easy. All we had to do was color a picture and read the story that went along with it.
Even though I missed lunch, everybody else had pizza. I went to Taco Johns and had a “Chili Fritos Burrito.” Yum! It had spicy cheese, crunchy Fritos, taco meat, and chili. No recess for me. I still wasn’t back yet.
When I finally returned, I went to P.E. Today was the last day we get to use the scooters. We played handball polo on them. We raced back and forth on the wood floor trying to get the ball in the net. Somehow our class managed to break part of the net. Good thing it was easy to repair. P.E. went by quickly and we went to music afterwards.
In music we sang our hearts out while we learned a song for our spring concert. Miss Rademacker also started the “JEFFS” warning system. Every time we are rude or loud she puts a letter up. If we get all five letters on the board we have to write an essay. My class came close to all five letters because we already had four. We didn’t have enough time to finish learning the whole song before we had to go.
Uh oh! Why is there a cop in the school? Is somebody in trouble? No, we have D.A.R.E. lessons. D.A.R.E. stands for “Drug Abuse resistance education.” We learn about not doing drugs and what they can do to people. We even have a book that we do things in. Today we learned about cigarettes and tobacco. We learned facts on why they are bad. Cigarettes are the number one cause of lung cancer. D.A.R.E. class is short and study hall and band soon followed.
In band we practiced from our books. We would have practiced our music for our concert but not everybody had gotten then sheet music. Band takes a lot of my study hall time. The only thing in study hall that I finished was spelling.
Today was very busy and we had a lot of assignments to complete, but I learned a lot of new things.
