Pink Out!

FBLA is selling Pink Out shirts along with MIlford.  We are wanting to wear these shirts on October 27 all day and during the Volleyball game that night.  All proceeds will go to the Susan B Komen foundation for breast cancer.  If you’d like a shirt, please fill out a form and send it along with your payment to Logan Kats at the high school.  Orders need to be in by October 12.

A New Playhouse!

The preschool received a new addition to the playground last week…a new playhouse! The preschoolers have been busy cooking and serving food, opening and closing the windows, and ringing the doorbell.

Sometimes You’re the Sculptor, Sometimes You’re the Clay

K-5 Classroom Guidance Lessons this week have had students practicing how to effectively communicate with others.  Communicating passively often keeps people from being heard or taken seriously.  Communicating aggressively often makes others mad, starts fights, or keeps people from liking you because it’s disrespectful.
Although it’s not always easy, assertive communication is the best way to communicate what you want or need at school.  Assertive communication is when you hold your head up and shoulders back, you look at the person you are talking to, you use a calm, firm voice and respectful words to say what you want or need.

Pictures – students in Mrs. Ruhnke’s 5th grade guidance classes partnered up to show one of the communication styles.  One student was the “sculptor” while the other was the “clay”.  Students sculpted their clay into a pose to demonstrate one of the styles of communication.

Author, Julia Cook Will Visit FPS On Monday, October 17, 2016

Julia Cook is a former teacher and school guidance counselor.  She has become one of America’s most recognized authors of guidance storybooks for children.  She writes practical, easy to use stories that not only make a positive difference, but are fun to read.  Julia has the innate ability to enter the world view of a child through storybooks, giving both children the “what to say” and the “how to say it.”  Cook’s ultimate goal:  make a positive difference in the lives of people both young and old by teaching lifelong problem-solving skills.

FPS Students and Staff Attend Digital Citizenship Symposium

Several teachers, students and administrators attended the Digital Citizenship Symposium in Kearney on Tuesday.

Featured Speakers were Karen Haase, Education Attorney, KSB School Law, Lincoln, Nebraska, Craig Badura, Technology Integration Specialist, Aurora Public Schools, Stephanie Bernthal, Instructional Technology Trainer, Educational Service Unit #17, and Hunter Radenslaben, @AthleteNationCo, Waverly High School, Waverly, Nebraska.

The purpose of the symposium titled “Be The Key” was to share information and educational resources on the topic of digital citizenship.

School personnel and students created a poster of the “Key” takeaways of the day.

Fairbury High School Receives $20,000 Grant From Educationquest

 

EXCITING COLLEGE EXPOSURE OPPORTUNITIES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Fairbury Jr-Sr High School was awarded the EducationQuest College Access grant for the next 4 years.  Each year for the next 4 years, we will receive $5000 to be used towards college access activities for all 9-12th grade students.  Such activities include, college visits for every student 9-12, providing ACT Test Prep sessions for students preparing to take the ACT, financial aid presentationś by EducationQuest personnel, college fair, and countless other opportunities for exposure.  Important dates and information for the month of October are listed below:

10/4:  College Fair-SCC Beatrice-all juniors and seniors

10/5:  College visit to UNL-all seniors

10/10:  Financial Aid Meeting for all seniors and their parents-11:50 a.m. at the HS

           How to fill out the FAFSA and create FSA IDś

10/19:  Apply2College Campaign-all seniors will apply to a college of their choice

Important information that seniors will need to know to create their FSA IDś are their social security numbers and a personal email.  For the Apply2College Campaign students will need to have some form of payment for the colleges that have an application fee.  If you have any questions, please call Taylor Biehl at 729-6116.

Plickers – Combining Old and New Technology

Mrs. Ruhnke’s fifth grade students practiced the meaning of their Social Studies Vocabulary words using the “Plickers” method. Plickers is a powerfully simple tool that lets teachers collect real-time formative assessment data without the need for student devices.  The questions are projected on the board and students pick either answer A,B,C,D by holding their cards so that the answer they chose is on the top.  The teacher then uses a device to scan the room and capture the students’ answers.

Rock in Prevention

The first PTA sponsored program, Rock In Prevention was held Tuesday.  Rock In Prevention, along with mentors from the high school provided the message that drugs are bad for your body and bullying should be stopped immediately.  This interactive program included lots of fun songs and actions!  Each family will receive a Rock In Prevention cd that reinforces these positive messages.  Be sure to ask your child about this fantastic program.

Football Team Visits Central School

The Fairbury football team had a blast Thursday morning greeting the students at Central Elementary. They were there to give high fives, get them excited for the school day, and talk a little bit about the homecoming game this Friday. It was an awesome opportunity to spread Jeff Pride throughout our community and schools. The Jeffs will take on Lincoln Christian this Friday @ 7:00p.m. GO JEFFS!
