Parent Pyramid Model Series

There has been an extension on the registration deadline for the Parent Pyramid Model series in Fairbury due to low registration. Registration is open until this Friday, October 19th with the first class starting on Monday, October 22.

This parenting series is free to register and dinner and childcare are provided at no cost each night. This is a wonderful opportunity being offered to parents in Jefferson County and feedback from last year’s class was very positive.

Students and Teachers Attend Digital Citizenship Symposium

Last week, Mrs. Carly Winter and Mrs. Karen Dux took two 6th grade and two 7th grade students over to the ESU in Beatrice for Digital Citizenship Day.  These students were able to listen to speakers from KSB Law as well as the Nebraska State Patrol on ways to be successful and safe online.  They also had time to create media tools to take back to their district to help educate others in on district.  Fairbury students chose to create a FlipGrid with various topics discussing how we can be safe, kind, positive, etc. while interacting online.
Use the link below to check out the start of their project.  The students who participated chose to share this out students in our district in hopes that others might add their thoughts and knowledge on the various topics.
The overall message we left with that day was “Be safe, be kind.”  If we can follow these rules when interacting online, we might just be able to make our digital world a better place!

Activity of the Month – Fall Inspired Painting
Tuesday, October 30th – 3:45 pm at Jefferson

This simple project requires autumn colored paints, a pencil for tracing your hand, a canvas or thick piece of paper,  and Q-Tips to dab leaves onto the tree. Simple, beautiful, and sentimental. Thanks to our new match, Tonya and Micah for going outside the box with their weekly match activity! For more Fall related craft ideas, follow our Fall Craft Board on the Fairbury TeamMates Pinterest page.

Happy Mentoring and Happy Fall!

Math Pilot

Miss Didier is piloting a different math program this year and it is fascinating to watch what these 7-year-olds can do!  Students in first grade are discussing different types of subtraction equations. On student notices that the equation 8-3=5 has the same numbers as 8-5=3 but are in a different order. Another student notices that the equation 9-7=2 can also be written 2=9-7.  What’s more amazing is that by using their strategy of drawing  and crossing out circles, the class is able to determine that 8-3=7-2 is a true statement. Daily, students make observations and talk about their understanding of math concepts. Here is an example of math talk where Connor explains his strategy for deciding that one of the equations on his worksheets is false.

Coming to Fairbury Public Schools
Monday, October 15, 2018

Author and illustrator Bruce Arant—a father of three—writes from years of personal experience of “tucking-in” at bedtime, when he has fielded all possible childhood excuses to stay awake just a little bit longer. Prior to becoming a full-time writer and illustrator, Arant enjoyed a career of nearly 20 years in the magazine and custom publishing industry, where he held a variety of editorial and creative positions. He lives in Omaha, Nebraska.

Elementary Family Fun Night

The Fairbury Cross Country Team helped sponsor the Elementary Family Fun Night with a color run on Monday, September 17.  Elementary students and their parents ran/walked on the junior high cross country course while getting splashed with various colors by the high school runners.  They also enjoyed a nutritious meal.

Preschool Students as Doctors and Nurses

This year in preschool, students in Mrs. Humphrey’s class have been learning a new classroom job.  The medical person is an important part of our day.  Each week two students get to decide if they will be a doctor or a nurse.  Then during the day when a classmate has a small scratch, bump or even a bug bite the medical team helps them by placing a band aide on the injured body part.  The students love this job.  They are learning so many things:  compassion, caring for others, being responsible with their trash, fine motor skills to open a band aide and how to ask others where it hurts.
It has been a great way to incorporate real world practices in our classroom.  The students take such pride and joy in helping their friends.

Acting Out Math

Miss Mohr’s kindergarten math class was acting out story problems using bears. Students got to make up their own stories such as, “Four bears went to the park. Then two bears went home. How many bears are at the park now?” “Three bears were at the park. Two more bears came to the park. Now there are five bears at the park.” They were also practicing counting with one-to-one correspondence. Students had fun “Acting Out” math for a real life math experience.
