Fairbury Beef Month

March has been dubbed “Fairbury Beef Month” at Fairbury Public Schools!  Due to the generous beef donations from Rich & Kitty DeBoer and Mark & Lori DeBoer and the money donations from the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce and Sharon and Jerry Ebke to help cover the cost of processing, we are finally able to kick-off our Farm 2 School program!!  On Tuesday, March 6, 2018 marked our first student lunch using 100%, locally raised beef!  Students and staff enjoyed hamburgers and potato salad/baked beans.  We will be serving Fairbury raised beef each Tuesday during the month of March.  The menu items will be Hamburgers, Beef and Noodles, Tacos and Roast.

Our dream began over a year ago to be able to serve locally raised products in our lunch program.  We held informational meetings where local producers came and learned how we can partner with them to serve their products to our students.  Our goal would be to serve locally produced meats twice a week each for week of the school year!

Children’s Author, Carmen Agra Deedy Visits FPS

You may have heard your student talking about the children’s author Carmen Agra Deedy in recent weeks. Ms. Deedy, a Georgia resident, originally from Cuba, visited Fairbury Schools on Wednesday, March 14th and presented a PTA sponsored program for all elementary students. Ms. Deedy is an internationally known author and storyteller.  You may find out more information about her on her website:

TeamMates Mentors Recognized at Basketball Game

Mentor appreciation night was held Friday, January 19th during the basketball games against York, arranged and equipped by the service here. It was great to have mentors who are new to the chapter and mentors who have been around since TeamMates came to Fairbury in attendance. It was also nice to see TeamMates Mentors from York stand to be recognized. Even as opponents, we are united in our cause.

Mentors are more than just volunteers. They are parents, business owners, veterans, and active members in our community. But once a week, they are even more. To their mentees, they are a trusted friend, a promise keeper, a bright spot in the middle of busy school day. By simply stopping by the school to chat or play a game, they do more than just mentor– they form meaningful relationships with their mentees that often last beyond the student’s time as a Jeff.

While the Fairbury chapter has 36 matches, there are still 23 students on the waiting list who would like a mentor of their own. If you would like to be apart of the mentoring team, please contact Tiffany Ebke for application details at tebke@fairburyjeffs.org

Central and Jefferson Celebrate Red Ribbon Week

Last week, Central and Jefferson students celebrated Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week is a national celebration that promotes and encourages students to choose to be drug free.  This year’s theme was, “Your Future is Key, So Stay Drug Free!” Students participated in many fun activities such as creating drug free chalk messages, dressing up, designing drug free posters and pledging to live a drug free life. Thanks to everyone who participated and joined in on the fun!  You showed everyone that you are taking care of your mind and body in a healthful way, and that you are citizens of good character today and everyday.

Fall Family Festival

Fun was had by all during the Fall Family Festival for all preschool families on Thursday, October 5th.  The children painted pumpkins, got their faces painted, went on a scavenger hunt, rode bikes through an obstacle course, made a yummy snack, and ate supper provided by the school.

The evening  goal was for parents to complete a ticket with their preschool student. They began at any station. Once the ticket had all the punches, they were traded in for a free Book at the Welcome Table.

School Health Screenings

Once again Southeast Community College Beatrice Nursing Students came to Fairbury Public Schools to assisted in conducting the school health screenings. The State of Nebraska mandates that schools screen students in Preschool to 4th grade, 7th and 10th graders, along with any new student to the district.

“It is so nice to have the SCC nursing students come and assist with these screenings,” said FPS school nurse, Becki Schmidt. “They screened over 500 students in three days. They not only helped me but they were also doing their clinical rotation for their Growth and Development class.”

The students are screened for height, weight, vision, hearing, and dental. If the student fails a screening the school nurse will rescreen the student at a later time and if they fail again a letter will be sent home to parents.

Solar Eclipse Event 2017

Fairbury Public Schools students took advantage of our prime location to view the rare solar eclipse on Monday August 21st! All present students in grades K-12  spent the day up at the athletic complex where they rotated through six different themed stations with eclipse-related activities. Student made galaxies in a bottle, pinhole eclipse viewers, models of the eclipse, did an art project (bubbles and chalk) and game and made UV and glow-in-the-dark bracelets! Elementary classes were paired with junior and senior high classes so that students got to interact in a multi-age education approach. It was a special opportunity for different groups of students to interact with each other!

Students got the best seat in the house converging on the practice field together to watch the total eclipse. A little rain in the morning didn’t dampen our mood and strategic cloud cover ensured a comfortable day outside but didn’t obscure the view of the totality. THANK YOU to all of the volunteers that spent their day supporting our students and to JCHC for sending volunteers and providing sunscreen for all students. First National Bank of Fairbury provided bottled water for all students and volunteers and Starr Plumbing for  the use of the port a potties.

Fairbury Public Schools appreciates the community’s support in providing this once-in-a-lifetime total eclipse viewing opportunity for our students!

Mrs. Maschman’s Class is Ready for the Eclipse

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights – a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun and the sun’s tenuous atmosphere – the corona – can be seen, will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk. For full article visit: https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/eclipse-who-what-where-when-and-how

Mrs. Maschman’s class created drawings of what will happen during the course of the day. We are all excited to take part of this great learning opportunity!
